Hollywood star Uma Thurman, having spent part of her childhood in India, wants to return to the country and possibly get involved with Bollywood. Thurman, whose father is a Sanskrit scholar and a Tibetologist, has a deeper connection to India than her name as she visits on a regular basis.

Currently in Dubai to launch Ange ou Etrange le Secret Elixir, a new fragrance by French fashion house Givenchy for which she is the ambassador, the 41-year-old told Gulf News, “I have friends there and I feel very connected to it… the smell, the sights, the people. It’s familiar. I didn’t realize how close we were to India (from the UAE). Had I known earlier, I would have gone by. I go there often, my last visit was about two years ago.”

When asked about starring in a Bollywood movie, Thurman said “That will be the best. I am good friends with Mira Nair,” referring to Nair with whom she worked with for Hysterical Blindness in 2002. “In fact, I heard she’s filming a movie in India that’s coming up soon and I’m very upset I’m not in it. I’m going to have a word with her about that,” she star joked.

What do you think? Would you want to see Uma on the silver screen in India or should she stick to Hollywood?

Cinema no more family entertainer: Imran Khan

Offbeat and parallel cinema, films for children and adults, or divided between rural and urban… the lines had been blurred for many years, but the Hindi film industry is now clearly divided into segments, says actor Imran Khan who also believes that Bollywood is now in its “best phase”.

“Cinema is no more a wholesome family entertainer. Just like television has always had different segments according to their feel and storyline, now segmentation is happening in the film industry,” Imran told in an interview.

He might be just five films old but Imran, nephew of actor Aamir Khan and producer-director Mansoor Khan, has had a long association with Bollywood.

“The segmentation may be on the basis of adult or children, rural or urban, commercial or offbeat cinema. All these segments have been overlapping for years but have never never been defined so clearly as they are now,” said Imran, whose latest film ” Delhi Belly” releases Friday.

The 28-year-old had a stint with showbiz as a child star in films like “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” and “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander” before stepping into Bollywood as a leading man in the 2008 romcom “Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na”, directed by Abbas Tyrewala and produced by Aamir.

He later went on to do films like “Kidnap” with Sanjay Dutt and Minissha Lamba, “Luck” with Shruti Haasan, “I Hate Luv Storys” with Sonam Kapoor and “Break Ke Baad” with Deepika Padukone.

Other than his debut film, the others were dismal failures. But the actor, set for his latest release, feels the industry is in its best phase.

“In my opinion, we are in the best time that Hindi film industry has ever had… because, as the way it has opened up, there has been nothing like this in the past. It is growing by leaps and bounds,” said Imran.

“In the last couple of years we have set a new set of record for box-office; collected more money than anybody could have ever thought an Indian film could. Our market is growing, our cash turnover is growing. It is exploding,” he added.

Interestingly, Imran is of the view that the collaboration with corporate houses has been a bane.

“In the last few years there has been a massive boom with corporate film houses – and now they are starting to learn their lesson. In a couple of months, they kind of destroyed the market.

“They were so desperate to have a star that they were just throwing money without asking about the script, the budget… nothing. They were happily signing on pay cheques of Rs.20-40 crore without having any knowledge about it. It took the industry time to understand that it was not helping but degrading the standards,” he said in a firm voice.

Imran, who is amongst the most sought after actors in Bollywood, admits he is very particular about the kind of business his film does.

“I am very particular about the recovery of my business. I charge less money than most of my contemporaries. I don’t like to burden my film upfront. I tend to take a share in the profit of the film. It’s a risk – you are gambling on the success of your film.

“I am basically investing in the future because by keeping my budget low I am ensuring a better opportunity for my film to perform. If it does well, I will earn more money, but if it doesn’t I will lose money along with it.

“But my prime worry is that along with the film everybody who works on the project should make money. I want people in the industry to say: ‘if I work with Imran it’s a good investment’.”

When asked how difficult it is for a newcomer to break into an industry dominated by the Khans and Kapoors, he said :”Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir – they are like legends now, they have been here for more than 20 years. It takes that much time to build up that kind of fan following. It can’t happen in two years. You have to consistently build an audience.”

Balancing the world of live stand-up comedy, and movies, is such a laugh for Vir Das. Delhi Belly, in which he makes his latest filmi appearance, releases on Friday

He’s the undisputed expert when it comes to tickling the funny bone and has no qualms admitting that without his career in stand-up comedy, Bollywood would never have beckoned. Still basking in the success of his last film “Badmaash Company”, Vir Das is all set for the release of his latest film, “Delhi Belly”.

An Aamir Khan Production, the film also stars Imran Khan and Kunaal Roy Kapoor. At the very outset, Vir Das clears the air. “I don’t provide comic relief in the film as such. It isn’t about the dialogues or the characters being funny, however, the situations they get into would generate laughter among the audience,” he says.

Clearly, Vir has moved beyond the kind of work he’s done before. “I decided to do the film because it was a departure from my previous works, he points out, adding: “My character in the film, Arup, is a constant victim of bad luck. He’s always in the wrong place at the wrong time and that’s what keeps this role edgy. Arup has a horrible job, a horrible boss, a horrible girlfriend and it just gets worse — he has horrible hair, too!” (laughs)

The renowned comedian has worked hard to fit the role. “I actually had to shave my head although I was highly apprehensive about it at first. I even knocked off some kilos for my role in Delhi Belly,” he informs.

“But the real challenge was for me to find the right level of angst that was required of Arup, considering the many action sequences.”

It isn’t surprising that Vir got along with his co-stars like a house on fire.

“Imran, Kunaal and I are the younger breed of actors and it was fun working with them and hanging out with them. In fact, we spent such a lot of time together that Aamir ensured we had the same vanity van. Our friendship off-screen totally translates on-screen too and if it didn’t, the script would be lost,” Vir says.

The budding actor has been flooded with an insane number of scripts but he’s clear he will do just two films a year because stand-up comedy can never be sidelined. He explains: “The best thing about my life is that I don’t need to choose between careers. I can pursue everything I want to, but I only need to prioritise.”

Up next, he’s got Tanuja Chandra’s “Raakh”, which, by far, he says, is the most challenging role he’s had to play. “It’s my first dramatic lead and it’s taken a lot to perfect the accent, dialect and my appearance for the film.”

In the meanwhile, Vir Das is awaiting his world tour. “I gave stand-up comedy a break for six months and now I’m back in action. The feeling is just exhilarating.”

When he isn’t cracking people up or facing the camera, Vir Das manages to find time for his passion —guitars (he has nine in his collection already). “I’m a techno-freak so that’s another obsession and so is my new dog,” he signs off.

“Delhi Belly” releases today.

A retrospective of the films of the legendary Raj Kapoor – the first in nearly three decades – has been organized by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and to launch the event, TIFF, in collaboration with IIFA, held a tribute event in honour of the great showman last Sunday.  Raj Kapoor and the Golden Age of Indian Cinema is designed to carry on the work begun by IIFA in Toronto, showcasing not only many of Raj Kapoor’s finest films (including Barsaat, Awaara, and Shree 420), but also some of the finest films to come out of Indian cinema starting in the 1950s.

Noah Cowan, artistic director at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, noted that “TIFF has a long-standing commitment to South Asian programming which we’ve demonstrated during our annual film festival, in our year-round programming, and we’re honoured to be presenting a tribute to the legacy of the legendary Raj Kapoor and the extraordinary moment in cinema that he was instrumental in creating. Raj Kapoor’s influence as an actor and a director continues to this day. His importance in global film culture is undisputed, but he is not as well known in North America as he should be.  This tribute, this retrospective should change that for good.”

Premier Dalton McGuinty of Ontario spoke of Raj Kapoor’s “deep understanding of his times and his audience.  His genius drew upon earlier Indian cinema, Hollywood, and his desire not only to entertain,  but to enlighten.  He challenged the way Indians looked at each other, and captured their hopeful spirit, and thanks to IIFA and our very own Toronto International Film Festival, we too can now be entertained and enlightened by an international genius of film.”

“If you see a film that we share with you, at the end of this retrospective,” noted Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, “you’ll see that probably the first person to believe in this global vision of cinema was Raj Kapoor.”  Joseph called Raj Kapoor “[a] visionary director, a distinct voice in the history of Indian cinema, and an institution of cinematic craftsmanship.”

One of the highlights of the tribute evening was a wide-ranging conversation with Raj Kapoor’s three sons:  Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and Rajiv Kapoor, and hosted by the great Indian actor Anupam Kher.  From Raj Kapoor’s working habits, to his inspirations, to insights into his films, the audience was treated to their observations, and even a few surprises, including Rishi Kapoor’s revelation that Archie comic books served as part of the inspiration for the teenage rebellion romance, Bobby (a film Rishi noted was made not for his launch, but purely as a vehicle for Dimple Kapadia).

“I think in Raj-sahib’s films you saw heart more than the craft,” said Anupam Kher.

“Love, thy name is Raj Kapoor,” added director Ramesh Sippy, of Sholay fame. who noted that his favourite Raj Kapoor film was Shree 420, most particularly for the song “Pyaar Huwa Ikraar Hua”.  “To me,” said Sippy, “it was absolutely beautiful, and it was simple.  It was in the rain, and an umbrella….what it brought to my heart was, my god, I’ve never felt love so strongly.”

“The films that Raj Kapoor has made were for the common man,” said his son Randhir Kapoor. “which he made not from the brain, but from the heart  […] it was speaking straight from the heart, and I’m very glad, I’m extremely happy that various people of the other worlds rather than India are also seeing his work and learning to appreciate the films of Raj Kapoor.”

His brother Rishi Kapoor added:  “What I learned earlier was that the place we are at, Bell Lightbox, is supposed to be the church of cinema, and thank you, church, for exhibiting Raj Kapoor’s works.”

Raj Kapoor and the Golden Age of Indian Cinema will run from July 1st through August 7th, and in addition to the films, there is also a display of RK Studios memorabilia in the TIFF Bell LIghtbox atrium, including such items as the famous shoes and hat from Shree 420, the accordion from Sangam, the clown doll from Mere Naam Joker, and one of Dimple Kapadia’s dresses from Bobby.
