Success, fame, money can never make one forget their childhood friends and memories. When one encounters with such rare moments, nostalgia develops. Something similar happened with the Khiladi Kumar of Bollywood. Akshay Kumar met one of his school friends who not only presented Akshay with a photograph of his childhood but also revealed how naughty Akki was during his school days.

Akshay was overwhelmed to meet his friend and was sweetly surprised by the gift he brought along. “I am very happy to see my friend and also glad about this photograph of my school. I can’t tell how excited and surprised I am about it,” asserted an excited Akshay.

On asking Akshay’s friend to share something about their childhood, he quickly said, “Rajeev (his name before her entered B’town) was very naughty. Once I remember teacher and principal called his father to meet them, that time also he was just smiling as if nothing happened (he chuckled).”

So, Akshay it seems that before being the recipient of the title ‘Khiladi Kumar’, you were already a naughty and famous in school.

Working in India changed my approach to music: Wayne Sharpe

Posted Posted by Admin in News     Comments Comments Off on Working in India changed my approach to music: Wayne Sharpe
Jul
31

Mumbai:  New York-based American composer Wayne Sharpe doesn’t understand Hindi, but he has been composing the soundtracks and background scores for Bollywood films. He says after working on Indian projects, his approach towards music has changed.

“Working in India has completely changed my approach towards music. Most experimentations and melodies here are so rich in the culture of India, which is great. I love the sounds that are generated here and I am thinking of using Indian music in some of my other projects out of India,” Sharpe told IANS in an interview.

Sharpe, who has 25 years of experience in classical piano training and Western orchestra works, composed music for many television shows and over 75 ads in the US including Pokemon, First Person and The Martha Stewart Show.

He entered the Hindi film industry with Prakash Jha’s 2003 film Gangaajal and his aoosciation with the filmmaker continued with Apaharan and Raajneeti.

Does lack of understanding of Hindi language creates a roadblock while composing music for Bollywood films?

“It sometimes slows down the process a little bit, but it’s not such a problem. I get translations and videos with subtitles when I am working. But I feel music is something that has no language, it works with emotions. So sometimes it actually helps not knowing the language because I compose music or background score looking and feeling the visual emotions of the scene, without reading the subtitles,” said Sharpe.

“It is extra work for sure, but not a hassle. I’m learning as much as I can. My director also helps me,” he added.

He has scored for Jha’s forthcoming film Aarakshan which puts the spotlight on caste-based reservations in educational institutes and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Manoj Bajpayee.

Throwing some light on the brief that he was given for this film, Sharpe revealed: “Prakash had taken me through the whole script and practically through each scene. He wanted the sound of the film to be very unique and different. So I experimented with some instruments and got a westernised combined with a folk sound to it. It was very challenging to make sure that the background music sounds different.”

So how did he meet Jha?

“I met Prakash in New York more than eight years ago and I showed him my music. He invited me to India for Gangaajal, then I came here and started composing for him. Now we know each other’s style. I know what he likes and he knows what my style is so it’s a good working relationship,” said the composer, who likes the works of A.R Rahman and Shankar Mahadevan among other artists.

Sharpe, who comes to India only when he has some project in hand, has no plans to re-locate here.

Oz cricket keen on cachet for Big Bash League

Sydney, July 31(ANI): Though Cricket Australia has said from the outset that it cannot emulate the Indian Premier League, it wishes it could have a Bollywood- like touch to bring in the cash for its revamped Big Bash League.

Cricket Australia is sending Credit Suisse representatives on a roadshow to India this week to cultivate potential investors for the game.

  •   E-mail Article
  •   Printer Friendly
  •   Text-Size

Australian television personalities Eddie McGuire and James Brayshaw can offer a few things that cricket wants, starting with publicity.

As former captain Ricky Ponting said that cricket is losing the fight for relevance in a competitive sporting environment, Cricket Australia would do whatever it takes, even if that meant shamelessly borrowing from the football codes and adopting embarrassing marketing slogans.

“At the end of the day this competition is a massive thing for Australian cricket. They have poured a lot of time and money into it and they need to make it work and the players are a big part of it. Over the years Cricket Australia have tried everything to attract new faces to the game, whether it’s fans, sponsors or participants”, the Sydney Morning Post quoted Ponting, as saying.

“Right at the moment 50-over cricket and Test cricket doesn’t really appeal to five to 15-year-old kids. With all the other competition out there with other sports … I think cricket has fallen by the wayside a bit. We have to have a look at the structures, and the way kids are introduced to cricket these days”, he added.

Oz cricket’s obsession with the Australian Football League doesn’t end with the recruitment of a handful of recognizable and influential directors.

Australian cricket envies football’s tribal links, cultures and rivalries that have evolved over decades, which the Big Bash League is trying to manufacture in a few months.

The next task for each team is to build a membership base, a concept alien to cricket and particularly new to Sydney.

The task is rendered more difficult by the fact that each League team has only three or four home games to sell.

In the end, Australian cricket will need more than a superficial association with football to realize its ultimate ambition, which is to eventually invest enough money to support the longer forms of the game.

For this, it needs Indian players, who would not be released by their board in the short term, to boost the value of media rights when they are next sold in 2013.

In the absence of Bollywood film stars, one can be sure that Big Bash team would hunt for Australian cricket’s closest thing to a movie star – legendary cricketer Shane Warne. (ANI)

Never compromise on the story: Abhay Deol

Posted Posted by Admin in News     Comments Comments Off on Never compromise on the story: Abhay Deol
Jul
31

Is he shy? Mostly not. Wary of the press? Yes. Bored answering the same ‘Are you trying to be different’ question? Positively.

Of the many adjectives used to describe the actor, unconventional, quirky, contemporary, arrogant and cagey are staples. Which of these has he adopted by design and which are inherent to him? As dimpled Deol, riding high on his latest hit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, cheerfully settles in for a conversation at the palatial Deol bungalow, Juhu, nothing about him seems laboured.

The ‘different’ tag has stuck. The 35-year-old retorts, “I wish I could set the record straight. What can I say? If you ask me the same questions, you are bound to get the same answers. No one asks me about politics, religion, land-grabbing.

There is a lot more to me than just my ‘different’ choice of movies. My opinions on other subjects don’t make for good enough copy. So we stick to jaded questions on my relationship with Preeti. Originality drives me. I am an individualist, my work reflects that.”

Not the conventional hero, even though he has the dancing skills of the Deol family, Abhay’s niche repertoire of movies range from a mildly-successful start with Socha Na tha, to a dramatic Dev D, frilly Aisha, clever Honeymoon Travels, understated Manorama Six Feet Under, among others. His latest hit is his most commercial attempt so far.

After a few hits and a few misses, this ‘risky’ actor seems to have cracked the code and won over industry skeptics. He’s convinced it’s not the originality they bought into, but the fact that the movies raked in money.

“The way this industry works, the powers that be are most comfortable when there is a formula to fall back on. If you break away and make a hit, they’ll buy into you and try and tame that wild-streak into a series of similar stories,” says the actor.

In the fight to constantly salvage his individuality and creativity, he scouts for scripts that bring him an honest, emotional connect. The Bollywood-ization of stories, as real as they may be, has always been difficult for him to comprehend. “Why romanticise a Devdas and turn him into some lovelorn depressed soul who died for his lover. He was an addict and died because of his addiction. My version of Devdas was born out of real instances, real people. The audience reacts to something it can associate with,” he says.

It’s probably this understanding and conviction that gives him confidence, often mistaken for arrogance, to take chances with scripts and new directors. “If the story is good it will sell no matter what. Never compromise on the story. Film-making is a risky business. If you pump in crores to market a weak script it’s going to plummet no matter what you do. If the budget is small, risks are smaller. You can’t predict the fate of a movie, but I am convinced that if the story agrees with me, it will do well,” he says audaciously.

While his peers rake in the money with big banners and multi-crore projects, Abhay drums away to his own tune hoping that evolution will get acceptable in a rigid, formulaic industry. But somewhere, the lack of support pinches. “It would be nice if people were willing to take more chances,” he says.

Does he fear taking himself too seriously? His practical streak seems to run as deep as his wild one. His fear of being too self-indulgent with his cinema has kept his choices in check. What made him naive as a newbie is now his strength.

From a series of flops, to now being bankable, his marketing strategies have evolved, as have his choices. He balances his business act by grabbing the pulse of the audience with Honeymoon Travels and Dev D on the one hand and having big banners such as UTV produce a string of releases, on the other.

Growing up as an argumentative but adequately-rebellious teen Abhay was surrounded by a robust Bollywood family. Uncle Dharmendra and brothers Sunny and Bobby, exposed him to the dualities of modern city-bred film-industry life as well as a conservative, conventional family and religious values. He questioned them like everyone else.

“Being an Arya Samaji we follow its reformed, inclusive version but being Punjabis we also have a strong conservative strain. I could see the hypocrisy early on, so I chose to step away. Women in short dresses have loose characters; watching a kissing scene make her a slut. These were concepts I had been exposed to but didn’t believe in. My parents were forward thinking enough to raise me in the city.” How do they handle what is written about him? “My mother came to ask me if I was engaged after someone printed a ridiculous story. They fall prey to it once in a while,” he laughs.

Some actors just are, and some labour over what they’d like to be seen as. For Abhay, acting is inborn, labouring over it turns into a craft. “I didn’t think I was eccentric until people started to say so. What’s quirky to some, seems normal to me. I like the fact that acting is when you are at your most vulnerable. If you’re honest with it, your vulnerability is accepted, appreciated. As an actor, people buy into you.”

His light-hearted, witty ease and intuitive disposition leads one to believe that there is honesty in his quest for eclectic and sound cinematic material. His uniqueness is no front. He won’t conform to a standard, not even the bohemian one.

Versatile Ajay Devgn catches up with the Khans

Posted Posted by Admin in News     Comments Comments Off on Versatile Ajay Devgn catches up with the Khans
Jul

Ajay Devgn (PTI Photo).
Ajay Devgn (PTI Photo).

‘Singham’ is roaring away at the box-office these days. The film—the Hindi remake of the Tamil superhit starring Suriya—has already matched and broken Bollywood box-office records in its first week.

And where is its star Ajay Devgn?

Is he visiting theatres, thanking fans, giving interviews and working towards maintaining the post-release buzz? No, Ajay Devgn is in Bangkok shooting for his next film. Those who know him best say this is vintage Devgn—he’d rather let his work speak for him.

Well, right now it’s chattering rather loudly. ‘Singham’s net opening weekend collections stand at Rs 31 crore, giving it the second highest opening weekend of 2011 so far, after the Salman Khanstarrer ‘Ready’ which netted Rs 42 crore (source: koimoi. com). Devgn notched up four hits in 2010: ‘Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai’ in which he and Emraan Hashmi shared equal space, the political thriller ‘Raajneeti’ with an ensemble cast, the third instalment in the multi-star-cast ‘Golmaal’ series and the more modestly mounted comedy ‘Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge’ with Konkona Sen Sharma and Paresh Rawal.

Now in 2011 with ‘Singham’, he has become the only male Hindi film star other than the Khans and Akshay Kumar with solo-hero films to their credit that have crossed the Rs 29 crore mark on the opening weekend (source: boxofficeindia.com).

So in an industry which measures stardom almost entirely by your last film’s initial, is Devgn now a Khan? “He’s definitelyd rawing closer,” says trade analyst Komal Nahta. “What a turnaround it’s been! Just 4-5 years ago, Ajay delivered about 18 debacles and only a couple of average films over a two-and-ahalf year period. But today I’d say he’s one of Bollywood’s few bankable stars.”

The reason for that turnaround is now part of industry folklore. A star who was once known for his penchant for fisticuffs and brooding intensity, Devgn was either plain lucky or displayed remarkable foresight when he decided half a decade back to hitch his fortunes to comedy. The ‘Golmaal’ series with a talented ensemble cast is now one of Bollywood’s most successful film franchises and he also has other successful comedies on his CV. The star simultaneously changed the spelling of his name from Devgan to Devgn, while mixing and matching film genres. He also began experimenting with his look, altering his hairstyle for one film, building up his body for another.

His muscular frame in ‘Singham’ is as much a talking point as the film’s well-choreographed action. But his well-wishers feel it’s not enough. His friend Rohit Shetty, director of ‘Singham’ and the ‘Golmaals’, is one of several colleagues who believe Devgn does not get his due because “he is bad at his PR”. Asked if he thinks ‘Singham’ may be big at the popular awards in end-2011, Shetty replies acerbically: “It depends on whether Ajay will dance at the awards functions. He won’t, so I’m not getting Best Director and he won’t get anything either. Forget about getting awards, Ajay and I have not been invited to the Filmfare Awards for five years now.”

The bitterness is echoed by director Milan Luthria who too feels Devgn has been under-rated both as an actor and a star, both by the public and the media. Adds Luthria, helmsman of the blockbuster ‘Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai’: “From the beginning, he has walked a different path. He knows his craft and is unafraid of an unconventional approach to choosing roles.”

But if our destiny is designed by the choices we make, then Devgn must take at least some responsibility for how his past filmography has coloured media and public perception. For instance, despite being a critically acclaimed heavyweight with two National Awards under his belt, his performance as a supposedly autistic person in ‘Main Aisa Hi Hoon’ as recently as 2005 showed little research on the condition. Rituparno Ghosh, who directed Devgn in ‘Raincoat’, believes he should be more judicious in selecting his roles too. “The image that is projected of Ajay is that of a macho, dark brooding hero,” says Ghosh. “But I think he has a gentle delicacy about him that he is capable of bringing out. He possesses the magical ability to transform into a common man without much cerebration.”

What has worked best for the star in recent years has been his ability to shift genres with ease.

There’s more where that versatility came from. Next in line from Devgn are the David Dhawan comedy ‘Rascals’, the action thriller ‘Tezz’ directed by Priyadarshan, Rohit Shetty’s comedy ‘Bol Bachchan’ (a remake of the old ‘Golmaal’ starring Amol Palekar) and a remake of the Telugu comedy ‘Maryada Ramanna’. His work certainly speaks well for him, but it wouldn’t hurt if he did a bit of talking himself.

New Delhi: Bollywood actors Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone will appear as special guests on the fifth season of the game show “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, which starts off on August 15 with megastar Amitabh Bachchan as the host.

“One interesting candidate and the entire anxiety of the working of the show just flies past .. we had a few today and tomorrow is another day .. let us hope that all goes well .. the second episode towards the evening will have invites to Saif and Deepika .. who come to promote their film and mine as well – ‘Aarakshan’ !!!”Amitabh posted on his blog bigb.bigadda.com.

“In many ways, the philosophy of the film and that of KBC is quite similar. Given opportunity, even the lesser privileged shall prosper. Or at least have the capacity to prosper,” he wrote.

Aarakshan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone

However, Mumbai rains played spoilsport as the production unit had to stall the shooting of the show several times due to the noise of the rain.

“The rains have been incessant.. and so harsh that we had to stop shooting KBC at times, because of the noise factor. But all in all a most satisfying day … harsh and hard, but satisfactory,” Amitabh said.

Saif had previously appeared with actress Preity Zinta in the second season of the show, while Deepika came as a guest last year although she didn’t play.

After the success of Dhinka Chika song from Salman Khan starrer Ready, southern composer Devi Sri Prasad, who was always keen to work in Bollywood, is now keen to sign new projects and take forward his alliance with Hindi films.

“There are lots of offers started pouring in from Mumbai. I am definitely keen on taking them but I am not jumping into them right away as I am too busy with my Tamil and Telugu projects,” Prasad told IANS.

“There is one Bollywood project, which I am very keen about. But I won’t be able to speak about it right away. I haven’t signed it as yet,” added the 31-year- old composer.

Ready was remake of a Telugu film by the same name and Dhinka Chika was the Hindi version of Devi’s composition Ringa Ringa in the Telugu version.

Prasad is overwhelmed by the success of the song and considers it his first stepping-stone into Bollywood.

“I never expected such good reviews followed by such a success of the song Dhinka Chika. It’ll really help me in starting a full-fledged career in Bollywood,” he said.

Prasad had two hits in Tamil and one in Telugu and he takes pride at being the first composer who could give hits in three different languages simultaneously.

“This summer I had two releases–Mr Perfect and the other 100% Love here — and both were super-duper hits. The music of another Telugu film has also become a big hit along with Dhinka Chika in Hindi. I think I am the only music composer who had hits in three languages at the same time,” said the composer.

How does he manage to churn out so many songs in different languages and at the same time keep them unique?

“Music is more about emotions than language. So, in whichever language you compose, the original raw expression of the song is always the same. So I just try to work with the emotions. Once you get connected to the emotion, music automatically happens,” said Prasad.

He got offers from Bollywood before Dhinka Chika, but “I was waiting for a really big break with big hero and a big banner. I always had an ambition to work in Bollywood but I never took a practical step because of lack of time.”

Peace TV reaches the whole world but has problems with Australia only. It was recently made accessible though I've heard from people at PeaceTV that the availability in some parts of Oz has issues.
