I’m ‘one of the greatest’ managers: Mourinho

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho said on Friday he remains “one of the greatest managers in the world” despite his team’s poor start to the Premier League season.

Mourinho demanded respect from the media after Monday’s 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, United’s second defeat in their opening three games of the campaign, and he continued the theme ahead of Sunday’s trip to Burnley.

“I have won eight titles. I’m the only manager to win in Italy, Spain and England,” he told reporters.

“Not small titles, proper titles, and my second place last season was one of my greatest achievements in football,” he said.

Mourinho won the Serie A title with Inter Milan in 2009 and 2010, the Spanish title with Real Madrid in 2012 and three Premier League titles with Chelsea. He also won the Portuguese league twice with Porto.

“I am the manager of one of the greatest clubs in the world, but I am also one of the greatest managers in the world,” he said, defending his record at United where he won the Europa League in his first term in charge and then sealed the Premier League runners-up spot last season.

“I had last season great success. I had great success last season, that’s what you probably don’t want to admit. I analyse my performance myself, and for me it’s more important what I think than what you think,” he added.

Asked if he would still consider himself to be one of the greats if he failed to win a title with 20-times champions United, Mourinho said: “Did you read any philosophers? … Hegel says, the truth is in the whole. It’s always in the whole that you find the truth.”

He then turned the tables on the media. “Do you ask that question to the manager that finished third in the Premier League last season? To the manager that finished fourth? To the manager that finished fifth?” he asked.

Mourinho also explained his decision to stand in front of the fans at the end of Monday’s defeat and applaud them.

“In relation to me, I know the majority of the stadiums are used to the winning manager jumping around, go up to the crowd and putting his face in front of the camera. With me that is not happening,” he said.

“Normally when I win, I’m the first one to leave, but a defeat at home, an important defeat at home, that’s the way I am. I have to go to the pitch and see the reaction. The reaction could be both ways and it went a way where I felt really humbled and the team felt really supported,” he said.

Currently, the most reliable jailbreak available to iOS 11 users is CoolStar’s Electra tool that supports devices running iOS 11.3.1 through iOS 11.4 beta 3. A lot of people in the jailbreak community are waiting for an iOS 11.4 jailbreak tool, but the scene doesn’t look so promising. Now a respected security researcher has renewed our interest in the iOS 11.4 jailbreak.

Zheng himself unlike to release a public jailbreak tool

Min ‘Spark’ Zheng, a security researcher at Alibaba, outlined two new bugs in iOS 11.4 during his presentation at the DefCon 26 hacking conference in Las Vegas. Spark’s presentation has sparked speculations that we may eventually see an iOS 11.4 jailbreak release, maybe after the iOS 12 rolls out to the public next month.

Min Zheng’s presentation was titled Fasten your seatbelts: We are escaping iOS 11 sandbox. You can find his complete presentation on GitHub. His presentation suggests both the bugs were reported to Apple on June 7th. The iPhone maker patched them in iOS 11.4.1 and iOS 12 beta. But the bugs are still present in the iOS 11.4.

Will Min Zheng – or someone else – use these vulnerabilities to create and release a full-fledged iOS 11.4 jailbreak tool? Zheng is a security researcher who discovers bugs for research purposes, not for jailbreaking. He himself is unlikely to release an iOS 11.4 jailbreak to the public.

However, another hacker interested in liberating iOS devices for the broader community could put in the hard work to put together a public jailbreak tool. It’s possible, but it’s too early to say who will take up the challenge.

Azad expected to talk about iOS 11.4 jailbreak next month

A developer going by the name Brandon Azad is also expected to talk about a potential iOS 11.4 jailbreak at a security conference in Hong Kong next month. Azad’s presentation at the beVX Conference is titled Crashing to root: How to escape the iOS sandbox using abort ().”

Azad will demonstrate how to exploit the CVE-2018-4280 bug in iOS 11.4, which Apple fixed in the iOS 11.4.1. The bug is attributed to Brandon Azad himself in Apple’s security release.

A potential iOS 11.4 jailbreak is not outside the realm of possibility, but it may be a long wait. Even if a developer releases the 11.4 jailbreak tool in the coming months, very few users would stay on the iOS 11.4 firmware after the public rollout of iOS 12.

Notably, Apple stopped signing iOS 11.4 last month following the release of iOS 11.4.1. If you have upgraded to iOS 11.4.1 or iOS 12 beta, there is no way to go back to iOS 11.4. Potential jailbreak users are most affected when Apple stops signing an older firmware. We are unlikely to see any further iOS 11.x releases as iOS 12 is just around the corner.

The iOS 12 will bring a number of new features and performance improvements. It will offer improved augmented reality, Memoji, Siri Shortcuts, better parental controls, and Screen Time. The Screen Time feature will let you see how much time you spend on your iPhone or iPad and within individual apps. Users will also be able to set daily time limits on individual apps. Apple has also promised that iOS 12 would offer 70% faster swipe to the camera and 50% faster keyboard display, even on older iPhones and iPads.

Houghton charged with Derbyshire coaching challenge

The former Zimbabwe Test batsman Dave Houghton is returning to Derbyshire as the county’s new head of cricket from the end of the current season.

Houghton, 61, who still lives in Derby, has spent two previous spells with the county, the first as director of cricket between 2004 and 2007, the second as batting coach from 2011 to 2013, the role he currently occupies at Middlesex.

Houghton will be assisted by John Wright, who was the club’s specialist Twenty20 coach this summer, who has been appointed in an advisory role supporting recruitment, talent identification and cricket strategy.

Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman, who has been combining his duties on the field with a de facto position as head of cricket since Kim Barnett stepped down from his consultancy role at the club in July, welcomed the appointment, although he admitted he has yet to learn how Hougton’s arrival will impact on him.

“It is a fantastic move by the club,” Godleman said. “Dave is a fantastic guy with excellent cricket experience.

“I know he cares deeply about the club. He still lives in the area and we are really fortunate to have the cricket brain and the good man that is Dave Houghton.

“I’ve spoken to him a couple of times and we will learn more about what he plans to do when he takes up his role but I’m just feeling that we are fortunate to have him and however the new structure falls I will play my role in supporting the club as best I can.”

In statements made through both Middlesex and Derbyshire, Houghton said:

“I have really enjoyed my time at Middlesex and I’m grateful for their understanding. It has been a difficult decision, but the opportunity to take up the head of cricket role at Derbyshire was not one I wanted to miss.

“I’ve had four outstanding years at Lord’s, working with excellent players in a terrific facility and I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to work at Middlesex and at Lord’s.

“One of my lasting memories was being a part of the team that won the 2016 County Championship title.

“There is an excellent group at Derbyshire, led by club captain Billy Godleman, who are committed to improving and I am looking forward to working with them.

“On a day-to-day basis, we want to make sure we provide greater support to the players and we will put a strong emphasis on development to reinforce the group of experienced and talented guys in the dressing room.

“It’s clear that the club has made great progress over the last few years and we want to continue this improvement, develop the squad and ultimately be competing for trophies.”

He leaves Middlesex with that county’s blessing. Middlesex’s Managing Director of Cricket Angus Fraser said: “David came to me a week ago to tell me that he’d been offered the position of head of cricket at Derbyshire and that he’d like to take up the opportunity.

“David’s home is in Derby, he does a lot of travelling, and this opportunity is a promotion for him – with these factors in mind I was more than happy for him to take up the position.

“He is a top man who will be sorely missed, and he has done an enormous amount of good work with the players at the club. He leaves us on very good terms, is thankful for “the happiest four years he’s had coaching” and all of us at Middlesex Cricket wish him the very best of luck in this new challenge.”

Houghton’s appointment ends a lengthy period of uncertainty at Derbyshire, who have not had a full coaching structure in place since Graeme Welch resigned as elite performance director in June 2016.

Although Barnett spent a season and a half working for the club in an advisory position alongside Godleman and first XI coach Steve Stubbings, it was never seen as a long-term arrangement.

Although he is a popular and respected person in the game, Houghton’s record in his previous period as head coach at the County Ground was not outstanding in terms of results.

He was commended for having improved the quality of the squad his contract was ended by mutual agreement in 2007 after a couple of poor seasons for the team in both red and white ball cricket.

Regarded as one of the world’s best batting coaches, Derbyshire won promotion when he returned to the county in that position but after relegation from Division One the following year prompted a management review and the replacement of Karl Krikken in the main coaching role, Houghton went as well.

Since then he has had a stint as batting coach with Somerset and was part of the coaching team at Lord’s when Middlesex won the Championship in 2016. He will complete the season at Lord’s before joining Derbyshire in October.

Derbyshire’s cricket advisory director, Colin Tunnicliffe, who led a recruitment panel that included chairman Ian Morgan and chief executive Simon Storey, said: “David is highly-respected within the game and brings a wealth of experience to the role.

“During the recruitment process, he impressed us with his vision for the club and made it clear that he wants to continue and build on the progress shown over the last couple of years.

“As a club, we want to put a strong emphasis on developing young and home-grown cricketers, and David is also passionate about this as we build for the future.

“We are equally pleased that John Wright has agreed to remain with the club as an advisor. Under his leadership, we have seen great progress in the Vitality Blast and having access to his experience and global network will support David in his role.”

Diesel guzzler Indian Railways turns to natural gas to cut cost

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Indian Railways on Thursday signed a preliminary deal with gas firm GAIL (India) Ltd to use natural gas in some of its operations, part of a drive by the world’s third biggest oil consumer to gradually shift to cleaner fuels.

India is building infrastructure, including pipelines and import facilities, to raise the share of gas in its energy mix to 15 percent in next few years from the current level of about 6.5 percent.

Using natural gas will be about 25 percent cheaper than the alternative fuels used by the railways at workshops and production units, said Ashwani Lohani, chairman of Indian Railways’ board.

He said the company would strive to shift all 54 of its workshops to natural gas by June 2019.

Indian Railways annually consumes about 3 billion litres of diesel, said Chetram, chief administrative officer of Indian Railways Organisation for Alternate fuels.

Only a fraction of that will be replaced by natural gas, he added.

He said Indian Railways can replace 844,027 cubic metres of acetylene, 2.35 million kilograms of liquefied petroleum gas and 140,991 kilograms of cut gases to save 170 million rupees ($2.4 million) a year.

“The objective of this memorandum of understanding is, on a pan-India basis, wherever we have reach, we will be supplying natural gas to the Indian Railways,” said B.C. Tripathi, chairman of GAIL India.

Betting patterns in Karnataka Premier League cause concern for bookmakers

Unusual betting patterns in the Karnataka Premier League in India have raised the concerns of bookmakers.

ESPNcricinfo understands that a couple of major betting companies – including Betfair – suspended trading on the KPL after the match between Hubli Tigers and Bijapur Bulls on August 16.

Just before the toss, Hubli were 1.9 (10/11; meaning the market’s expectation of a win for them was almost the same as its expectation of a loss) but, by the time the game started, enough money had been pumped into the market that the price moved to 1.2 (1/5) suggesting a great deal of confidence in Hubli’s victory. Hubli subsequently won what appears to have been a fairly unremarkable game by four-wickets with seven deliveries to spare.

As a result of the betting activity, however, Betfair have withdrawn markets for the rest of the tournament. It is estimated around USD 13 million (GBP 10 million) could have been expected to be waged on each match. Bet365 also briefly withdrew markets on the tournament, though they appear to have returned.

While ESPNcricinfo understands the ICC’s anti-corruption unit is aware of the development, an ICC spokesman suggested that, as it was a domestic tournament, it fell under the jurisdiction of the BCCI. They neither confirmed or denied they were aware of the incident.

A KPL official told ESPNcricinfo: “This is news to us. We have not heard of anything suspicious happening.”

While nothing untoward has been reported in this case, it is another example of the potential threats facing cricket. In recent days Sri Lanka Cricket has strengthened its anti-corruption protocols around the SLT20 having been concerned with “suspicious individuals” hanging around matches, while Al Jazeera are set to broadcast another documentary implicating players in spot-fixing.

As outrage grows, Supreme Court places rights activists under house arrest

Posted Posted by Admin in News     Comments Comments Off on As outrage grows, Supreme Court places rights activists under house arrest
Aug

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – India’s Supreme Court ordered police on Wednesday to put five prominent rights campaigners suspected of links to Maoist guerrillas under house arrest as outrage grew over their detention.

Critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government have dismissed the allegations against the activists, who were detained a day earlier, and said the crackdown was part of ongoing attempts to stifle all dissent.

Police detained the campaigners, seized their laptops and mobile phones, in raids on their homes in different cities, triggering protests and a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the action.

Sudha Bharadwaj, who has been fighting for the rights of workers in parts of India such as Chhattisgarh where left-wing guerrilla groups operate, said the action against her was part of a broader crackdown on opponents of the government.

“The effort is whatever is the opposition to this regime, whether it is workers’ rights, tribal rights, everybody who in the opposition is being rounded up,” she told reporters outside her home in Faridabad, a short distance from New Delhi.

The arrests follow months of tensions between right wing nationalist groups and advocates of free speech that has played out in college campuses and spilled over into the streets.

Critics also say several top journalists have been forced out of their jobs for their critical reporting of the government.

The others detained on Tuesday included were Varavara Rao, a prominent poet from the southern city of Hyderabad, activists Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira from Mumbai and civil liberties activist Gautam Navlakha from New Delhi.

Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party-led government has faced mounting criticism from activists and academics, who accuse it of undermining the secular and pluralistic principles of India’s constitution.

The BJP denies these allegations but says it is opposed to appeasement of any community and has long advocated tough action to protect national security.

“These five are no threat to anyone,” said Prashant Bhushan, a lawyer for a group of leading academics that has petitioned the Supreme Court to release the activists.

“The charges against them on the face of it appear indiscriminate, unwarranted, part of a malicious campaign to threaten human rights defenders, independent journalists, writers and thinkers in the country from critiquing the government and its policies, and an attempt to muzzle dissent,” the petition said.

INTELLECTUAL FORCE

Police have also accused the five of inflammatory speeches at a rally in western India last year which led to violent clashes between Dalits, the lowest in the Hindu caste hierarchy, and right wing organisations.

A police officer said the main case relates to speeches made during a rally held in the city of Pune on Dec. 31, 2017 commemorating the valour of Dalits. The following day, violent clashes broke out between members of the lower caste and hardline Hindu groups.

The police officer, who could not be named because he was not authorised to speak to reporters, said police had seized documents relating to the long-running Maoist insurgency afflicting parts of the country.

The guerrillas are fighting for the rights of the landless in parts of eastern and southern India, dubbed “the Red Corridor”.

The police officer said the five activists gave intellectual force to an insurgency in which thousands of people have been killed over the years.

Modi faces an election next year and opposition parties are trying to forge an alliance to stop his Hindu nationalists from coming back to power.

The Supreme Court headed by the chief justice Dipak Misra said it would hear the petition challenging the arrests of the activists next week and until then they would be placed under house arrest, and not police custody.

Judge D.Y. Chandrachud, one of the judges on the bench said the right to criticise was a crucial for democracy.

“Dissent is the safety valve of democracy. If dissent is disallowed, then the pressure cooker may burst,” he said.

Bebo on Kapoor family selling the RK Studio

Bollywood’s iconic Kapoor family has collectively decided to sell the sprawling landmark RK Studio.

Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan said she has fond memories of the studio, built by her late legendary grandfather Raj Kapoor.

Watch: Kareena Kapoor Khan’s ab workout will make your jaw drop

Kareena, who has been under the weather for a few days, said, “I don’t know how far what is actually happening. In fact, I have been quite under the weather and I haven’t even met my father in the last four or five days… But of course, we have all grown up walking around in those corridors.”

“I think it’s probably something that the family has decided, so it’s upto my fathers, his brothers and up to them… If that’s what they have decided, so be it,” added the actress at an event.

The Kapoor family has taken the tough decision of selling the two acre RK Studio 70 years after it was established as it was not economically viable to rebuild it after it was gutted down in a fire last year.

Rishi Kapoor, in an interview, on behalf of the family, said they were initially juggling with the idea of renovating the place with state-of-the-art technology, but the investment in rebuilding the studio would just not have yielded sufficient revenue to keep it going. He called it a “level headed decision”.

In September last year, a major fire broke out on the sets of a dance reality show, leaving a section of the studio gutted.

R.K. Studio, the headquarters of the film production company R.K. Films, was founded and named after the Great Showman, Raj Kapoor, in 1948.

Its inaugural banner film ‘Aag’ that year crashed at the box office, but the next year proved to be a good omen when its production ‘Barsaat’ (1949), starring Raj Kapoor-Nargis was a superhit.

In fact, the company’s logo was designed to reflect the poster of a scene from ‘Barsaat’ and after that, the studio never looked back.

It had a string of successful black-and-white releases like ‘Awaara’ (1951), ‘Boot Polish’ (1954), ‘Shri 420’ (1955), ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956).

Later, the studio was the venue for several other big ticket films like ‘Jis Desh Me Ganga Behti Hain’ (1960), ‘Mera Naam Joker‘(1970), ‘Bobby’ (1973), the debut film for Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (1978), ‘Prem Rog‘ (1982), ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ (1985), which was the founder-actor’s last film before his death in June 1988.

West Indies’ Ronsford Beaton cleared to bowl again

West Indies fast bowler Ronsford Beaton can resume bowling in international cricket after the ICC approved his remodelled action.

Beaton was suspended from bowling earlier this year after he failed an independent assessment of his bowling action, which had been reported as suspect during an ODI against New Zealand in December 2017.

On August 13, his remodelled action was re-assessed at Loughborough University in England, where the amount of elbow extension for all his deliveries was within the 15-degree limit allowed by the ICC. Beaton missed playing the CPL this year to work on his action and was replaced by Ali Khan at Trinbago Knight Riders.

Match officials are still at liberty to report Beaton if they find he is not using his legal action, footage of which will be handed to them in due course.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday Google’s search engine was hiding “fair media” coverage of him, without providing evidence, and said he would address the situation, although he gave no details.

In a pair of tweets, Trump said Google search results for “Trump News” showed only the reporting of what he terms fake news media.

“They have it RIGGED, for me others,” he said, blaming Google, part of Alphabet Inc, for what he said was dangerous action that promoted mainstream media outlets such as CNN and suppressed conservative political voices.

“This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!” Trump added. He did not offer any details.

Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Google also could not be immediately reached. Shares of Google’s parent company Alphabet fell 0.6 percent to $1,248.28.

While the exact science behind Google searches on the internet is kept secret, its basic principles are widely known. Search results on Google are generated by a variety of factors measured by the company’s algorithms.

They include determining a site’s relevance by counting the number of links to the page. Other factors such as personal browsing history and how certain keywords appear on the page also affect how pages are ranked. Popular news sites such as CNN.com and NYTimes.com, which many readers link to, can appear higher in searches based on such factors.

Trump has long criticized news media coverage of him, frequently using the term fake news to describe critical reports. He has made social media, particularly Twitter, an integral part of his presidency. He has previously accused social media companies, which include Twitter and Facebook, of censorship.

Trump’s accusation of bias on the part of Google comes as social media companies have suspended accounts, banned certain users and removed content as they face pressure from the U.S. Congress to police foreign propaganda and fake accounts aimed at disrupting American politics, including operations tied to Iran and Russia.

Companies such as Facebook Inc FB.O and Twitter Inc have also been pressed to remove conspiracy driven content and hate speech.

Tech companies have said they do not remove content for political reasons.

Some Republican U.S. lawmakers have also raised concerns about social media companies removing content from some conservatives, and have called Twitter’s chief executive to testify before a House of Representatives panel on Sept. 5.

Earlier this month, Alphabet’s YouTube joined Apple Inc and Facebook in removing some content from Infowars, a website run by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Jones was also temporarily suspended on Twitter.

Bollywood’s iconic Kapoor family has collectively decided to sell the sprawling landmark RK Studio.

Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan said she has fond memories of the studio, built by her late legendary grandfather Raj Kapoor.

Lizelle Lee’s commanding century powers Surrey to KSL title

Surrey Stars 183 for 6 (Lee 104, Sciver 40) beat Loughborough Lightning 117 (Villiers 3-22, van Niekerk 3-37) by 66 runs
Scorecard

A magnificent 55-ball century from Lizelle Lee took Surrey Stars to their maiden Kia Super League title, her side racking up 183 or 6 – their highest KSL total – before bowling Loughborough Lightning out for 117.

Fellow South Africans Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk then combined in lethal fashion to wipe out the Lightning top order, only three of their top six making it into double figures, before 19-year-old Mady Villiers finished off the tail with 3 for 22.

Put in to bat for the second time in the day, Stars had got off to another tentative start, with Bryony Smith and Sarah Taylor once again falling cheaply. By the end of the Powerplay they had accrued just 44 for 2 – an identical score to their semi-final Powerplay against Western Storm earlier in the day.

Stars’ eventual total, though, was 21 runs clear of their semi-final score, with the difference this time being one player: Lee. Taking the Lightning bowlers by the scruff of the neck from the outset, she wasted no time in belting Jenny Gunn over mid-off for the first six of Finals Day, before punishing the fourth over from Sophie Devine for four consecutive boundaries.

When her hundred came, brought up in characteristic fashion in the 16th over with a boundary through backward square leg, she had dished out similar punishments to each of the six Lightning bowlers. If any innings sums up Lee it was this one: far from pretty – at one point she swung and missed at the ball so hard that she ended up firmly on her backside behind the crease – yet nonetheless effective, built on sheer brute force.

While she rode her luck throughout, surviving several chances off left-arm spinner Kirstie Gordon’s opening over – the closest a catch put down on the long-off boundary by Georgia Adams, when Lee was on 37 and had barely got going – it was to prove no consolation for the disillusioned Lightning attack.

At the other end for much of the onslaught was captain Nat Sciver, the pair sharing a 111-run partnership for the third wicket. Sciver, fresh from her unbeaten 72 in the semi-final, was content to play second fiddle for much of the innings, though she produced some beautiful cover drives on her way to a 31-ball 40.

Neither finished the innings unbeaten – leading tournament wicket-taker Gordon adding the scalp of Lee to her successes as she was finally caught at long-off in the 17th over – but a 15-run cameo from van Niekerk ensured Stars cleared 180.

It was an intimidating total for Lightning and the loss of early wickets putting them on the back foot immediately. The injury of leading batsman Devine, who had to leave the field during Stars’ innings after being struck on the wrist fielding a ball struck by Sciver, did not help matters, the absence perhaps contributing to her early dismissal lbw to Kapp in the second over of the innings. van Niekerk also struck early, sending England’s Amy Jones back to the pavilion in the following over, before her two in two balls in the 10th did for Georgia Elwiss and Adams, and Loughborough sank to 63 for 6 at the halfway point.

But it was Stars’ young bowlers who impressed most, Sophia Dunkley having the dangerous-looking Rachael Haynes caught at point and Villiers adding three wickets to her KSL haul, wrapping up the Lightning innings with a four-over spell that included 11 dot balls. In last year’s competition Stars received much criticism after failing to hand the ball to any of their non-internationals once. It was fitting, then, that it was their young bowlers who helped them finally, three seasons in, lift the KSL trophy.
