On-field foes Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire united in promotion after rain-hit draw

Gloucestershire 220 for 7 (van Buuren 93, Charlesworth 77*) drew with Northamptonshire

As non-Test match grounds with English coaches and only five seasons in the first division between them, Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire share much that is unfashionable about cricket. That makes success all the sweeter when it comes. And so, with dual promotion secured and rain lashing the County Ground, players mingled in the home dressing room like brethren rather than opponents as they quenched considerable thirsts with smiles, joy, and a lot of noise.

By the time the Northants coach left Nevil Road at around one, their mood was distinctly merry. A few minutes later, more than three hours now after the game had been abandoned as a draw, the sun started to beat down and the Gloucester players emerged to drop anchor on the sticky dog of a pitch for selfies and a few more beers. A long day’s journey into night lay ahead.

David Ripley and Richard Dawson are the longest serving head coaches on the county circuit, appointed in August 2012 and January 2015 respectively. Ripley captained Northants when they were relegated in 2001, then took them up and brought them down in his present role in 2013-14. Dawson was actually playing against Gloucestershire, for Yorkshire, when they last went up in 2003. They dropped back down two years later.

Next summer will bring a huge challenge for both, though it would be wrong to think of this season as the easy bit. The campaign has been intense, of toil, nerves and sacrifice, of a few wins but the need at times to bounce back. Three weeks ago, as many as five teams were challenging to follow Lancashire into the top flight. Northants and Gloucester were rewarded only on the final day, and then with help from the weather in Durham.

The coaches speak with the same pragmatism. They are both Yorkshiremen, born roughly 30 miles apart in Doncaster and Leeds respectively, and Dawson acknowledges how his upbringing has shaped his approach.

Asked whether Gloucester had become institutionalised in the second division after so long, he said: “If I’d have thought that, I wouldn’t have come. I always wanted to be ambitious and shift us up. I don’t know whether people believed me when I said that on day one, in 2015, but if you are raised in Yorkshire, four-day cricket is your bread and butter. It’s just that Gloucester, 20 years ago say, were great at the white-ball game. They’ve had a rich red-ball history as well, but more recently it has been white-ball competitions.

“I’ve said since I came that we’ve got players who have done really well in 50-over and T20 cricket. That’s division one teams mixed with division two, so it shows we can do it against any opposition. The difference with red ball is that you have to do it for four days at a go, it’s mentally very taxing and that’s why this is a big achievement. It has become harder and harder to get promoted with more money coming into the game and the Test counties getting in the players.”

Dawson believes that the roots go back well beyond April. He said: “Basically, it has been two or three years trying to become harder to beat and when we do get the opportunity, nail it. We’ve talked about being ahead after one innings each, especially at Bristol. That gives us the chance to push through, which we did twice at Cheltenham, or draw and salvage some bonus points.”

Ripley, like Dawson, has drummed in the worth of attritional cricket. “I think we will have depth in the order next season, but none of them scored 1,000 runs this,” he admitted. “[Ricardo] Vasconcelos might have done if he’d played all the games and he is a talented young player. It could be Alex Wakely or Rob Newton or Richard Levi, we could do with one of them having the season of their lives. We have some naturally aggressive batsmen, it is a matter of them finding the balance between what the team needs and what they are used to doing.”

Name-checking Wakely is particularly interesting. At the end of May, he stepped down as captain. Adam Rossington, his successor, has been unbeaten since. “Much as I’d worked with Alex for a long time and have a lot of respect for him as a young man, I’ve seen him have those battles with lack of success because I’ve had them myself,” Ripley said.

“It wasn’t forced, but it just released Alex a bit and gave somebody else with a different personality a chance. Adam isn’t very animated and doesn’t say much, but he is pretty firm on the field. If they don’t bowl well, he just takes them off, where Alex perhaps doesn’t have that ruthlessness. But Alex has batted very well these past few weeks albeit without getting a big score.”

Gloucestershire had more batsmen with bigger aggregates, led by captain Chris Dent passing 1,000 runs. This partly reflects the easy-paced, Bristol pitch. Results are more important than personal landmarks and the county are investigating whether they can again play a third Championship game at Cheltenham, a money-spinner as well as a magnet for cricket lovers. The problem may be a clash between fixtures and the school term.

“It is great to be promoted, but if we are getting hammered on a Friday night by Derbyshire and Leicestershire, I’d be asking myself, ‘where did that 35 grand go?”

Northamptonshire coach David Ripley

Dawson does not anticipate a winter of many arrivals. “We don’t get prize money for coming third,” he said. “We aren’t going to add masses because we haven’t the money, and that isn’t me moaning. We have the players here who have stood up and played good cricket when they’ve been given the opportunity. Now they’ll have the opportunity to do it at another level.”

Northants are a step ahead after securing their main overseas player in Faheem Ashraf, the Pakistan all-rounder, for all cricket until the end of the T20 Blast. Ripley thinks that Ashraf will add pace to a bowling attack otherwise strong on skill and discipline. But the coach himself will miss part of the season when he serves alongside Darren Berry and Dimitri Mascarenhas as assistant coaches of Shane Warne’s Hundred team based at Lord’s.

Talks to bring Darren Stevens to Wantage Road in a coaching capacity ended when he re-committed as a Kent player following a dream end to the season. Having signed Gareth Berg from Hampshire, Ripley thinks the playing staff is almost complete and that money still in the budget may go on a 20-over player. “It is great to be promoted,” he said. “But if we are getting hammered on a Friday night by Derbyshire and Leicestershire, I’d be asking myself, ‘where did that 35 grand go?'”

At least 11 dead, thousands evacuated as flash floods hit Western India

MUMBAI (Reuters) – At least 11 people have been killed and six are missing after Pune and its neighbouring areas were hit by heavy rain and flash floods, a government official said on Wednesday.

More than 28,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas and the local administration is on alert for more rain, Deepak Mhaisekar told Reuters.

Pune, which is around 200 kilometres (124 miles) from Mumbai, has received 113% more rainfall than average since the start of the monsoon season in early June, a weather department official said.

Of the 11 deaths, five occurred in Pune when a wall collapsed, said Mhaisekar.

South Asia gets monsoon rain annually during the June-September months which cause fatalities and mass displacement.

India’s monsoons, which deliver more than 70% of the country’s annual rainfall, are crucial for farm output and economic growth, but rainfall often weakens the foundations of poorly built walls and buildings resulting in deaths.

Rohit, Umesh and South Africa’s dress rehearsal

Sep

Ahead of their three-Test series against India, which begins in Visakhapatnam on October 2, South Africa play a three-day warm-up match against the Indian Board President’s XI, starting Thursday in Vizianagaram. Rain is forecast for all three days of the match, and both teams will hope there is enough dry weather for their players to get a decent workout before the Tests begin.

Here are some of the key issues the two sets of players will look to sort out during the game.

Rohit Sharma, the opener

Contrary to widespread belief, Rohit Sharma has done a pretty good job when he’s got the opportunity to play Test cricket. Since the start of 2016, he averages 53.00 in 11 Test matches. It’s a sign of the depth of India’s batting resources that he can’t command a consistent spot in the middle order.

Thanks to KL Rahul’s long run of poor form and Prithvi Shaw’s doping ban, however, he now has an opportunity to try and turn himself into a long-format opener. Moving to the top of the order transformed Rohit’s ODI career. Can he make a similar move up the order work in Test cricket too?

Rohit doesn’t have much previous as a red-ball opener. In 137 innings in first-class cricket, he has opened just three times, the last of those occasions – when Mumbai attempted to chase an improbable target of 155 in 11 overs – coming in December 2012.

Apart from the Test-match combination of Rohit and Mayank Agarwal, the Board President’s XI squad also includes two other openers, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Priyank Panchal. Those two will probably have to accept a move down the order for now.

Can South Africa’s batsmen crack the Asia code?

Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis. Only one member of that world-class middle order remains standing now.

This isn’t to say South Africa have an inexperienced batting line-up, per se. Dean Elgar (56 Tests) has only played two fewer Tests than du Plessis, while Temba Bavuma (36) and Quinton de Kock (40) have been around Test cricket for a while, and Aiden Markram (17) is well settled at the top of the order.

But all of them have poor records in Asia.

This is South Africa’s first tour of Asia without both de Villiers (who averaged 54.56 in the continent) and Amla (47.66). In the absence of those two legends, their senior batsmen will have to step up and show the way for less experienced players like Theunis de Bruyn, Zubayr Hamza and Heinrich Klaasen.

Umesh Yadav’s window of opportunity

He took ten wickets in his last Test match at home. During India’s epic 2016-17 home season, he bowled more overs than Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma put together.

But until Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a stress fracture, Umesh Yadav wasn’t even in India’s squad for the Tests against South Africa. It is a reflection of just how vast India’s pace pool is, and also of Umesh’s own limitations.

If fit, Ishant and Shami should remain India’s first-choice new-ball pair for the Tests, and Umesh may not get a look-in unless – and it’s a big unless – they play three quicks. Still, if he can knock over a few top-order wickets in Vizianagaram, he will keep himself in the conversation.

Can South Africa’s spinners surprise?

The last time South Africa toured India, they came up against some of the squarest turners seen in this country in a long time. If their batsmen didn’t like it, their spinners should have enjoyed it, but Imran Tahir, Simon Harmer and Dane Piedt fell a long way short of matching the threat of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra.

Four years on, their squad includes Keshav Maharaj, who may well be their best red-ball spinner since readmission, Piedt – who has forced his way back into Test cricket after topping the 2018-19 4-Day Franchise Series wicket charts with 54 at 27.74 – and the allrounder Senuran Muthusamy.

Piedt and Muthusamy have been in India for a while now, having been part of the South Africa A touring side, and Maharaj has taken been in terrific form for Yorkshire in the County Championship, taking 38 wickets in five matches at 18.92.

With Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander, Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje in the pace mix, South Africa will use the Board President’s XI match to figure out what kind of bowling combination they will take into the first Test – two quicks and two spinners, three and one, or even three and two, given the batting ability of Muthusamy and Philander.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg wins ‘alternative Nobel Prize’

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg was named on Wednesday as one of four winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award, known as Sweden’s alternative Nobel Prize.

Thunberg won the award “for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts,” the Right Livelihood Foundation said in a statement.

Thunberg, 16, denounced world leaders on Monday for failing to tackle climate change in a speech at the start of a climate summit at the United Nations in New York.

She started solitary weekly protests outside Swedish parliament a year ago. Inspired by her, millions of young people poured onto streets around the world last Friday to demand governments attending the summit take emergency action.

Thunberg shares the award with Brazilian indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa of the Yanomami people, Chinese women’s rights lawyer Guo Jianmei and Western Sahara human rights defender Aminatou Haidar.

“With the 2019 Right Livelihood Award, we honour four practical visionaries whose leadership has empowered millions of people to defend their inalienable rights and to strive for a liveable future for all on planet Earth,” the foundation said in the statement.

The four laureates will received a cash award of 1 million Swedish crowns ($103,000) each.

Glamorgan held up by Watling, weather as promotion chances take a hit

Durham 262 for 8 (Watling 104*) v Glamorgan

Glamorgan’s slim hopes of promotion took a huge hit thanks to the weather and BJ Watling in their Division Two clash against Durham at Chester-le-Street.

Only 15 overs of play were possible on day two due to heavy rain, although the home side were able to record two batting bonus points, while Watling notched his 17th first-class century to frustrate the Glamorgan attack.

Marchant de Lange took the two wickets to fall on day two, but Durham were able to grind out a strong platform for the rest of the game.

Glamorgan need to win the contest and hope Gloucestershire are unable to claim enough points from their clash against Northamptonshire to earn the final promotion spot to Division One. However, the rain has left their margin for error next to nothing heading into the final two days of the match.

“We’re obviously frustrated with the weather around,” said de Lange. “We knew it was coming. We would have loved to have scooped up the four wickets this morning. It didn’t go that way for us, but we’re still in it, and there’s still two days left so we’ll see how it goes.

“Everyone here and around the country is watching the points system, but at the same time we know what we need to do. We need to go session-by-session and get as many points as we can for bowling and batting we know that we need to put up a good total and hopefully it will come down to the last day.

“You never what can happen in this game.”

The hosts resumed on 197 for 6 with Watling and Ben Raine at the crease. However, it took only three deliveries for Glamorgan to make the breakthrough. Raine got caught in two minds whether to leave a de Lange delivery and played on to his own stumps to fall for 26.

Leg byes brought up the 200 for the home side and the first batting point of the game before Brydon Carse upped the run rate as he pierced the off side with regularity to find the fence. He was looking comfortable at the crease, scoring a brisk 27, but then fended a rising ball from de Lange through to Chris Cooke behind the stumps.

Watling worked his way through the nineties and took his opportunity on 99 to send a quick single into the leg side, notching his first hundred for Durham from 201 deliveries. The home side secured their second bonus point after passing the 250-run mark, solidifying their position in the match before rain brought a premature to the day.

LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) – Google does not have to remove links to sensitive personal data globally, the European Union’s top court said on Tuesday as it ruled on the fight between the U.S. tech giant and French privacy regulators.

France’s privacy watchdog CNIL in 2016 fined Google 100,000 euros for refusing to delist sensitive information from internet search results globally upon request in what is called the “right to be forgotten”.

The cases are C-507/17 Google and C-136/17 G.C. e.a.

England drop Jonny Bairstow, call up Sibley, Crawley for New Zealand Tests

England have dropped Jonny Bairstow from the Test squad for New Zealand, while handing first call-ups to Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley. Bairstow, who averaged 19.45 in Tests this summer, was named in the T20I squad, along with a host of new faces that includes Somerset opener Tom Banton and Pat Brown, the Worcestershire slower-ball specialist.

With Ben Foakes overlooked for the New Zealand tour as well, the decision to leave out Bairstow means Jos Buttler is set to take over as England’s first-choice Test wicketkeeper on a tour that falls outside the Future Tours Programme but which has been earmarked as an important stepping stone for England ahead of their trip to South Africa in December.

The New Zealand series comes too soon for James Anderson, who recently confirmed his desire to play on despite injury limiting his Ashes involvement. England instead looked to one of Anderson’s younger Lancashire team-mates, with Saqib Mahmood included for both legs of the tour.

Of the XI that beat Australia at The Oval earlier this month to secure a 2-2 series draw, Bairstow is the only omission. Sibley is rewarded for a breakthrough season in which he has scored 1324 Championship runs – more than anyone else in the country – while Crawley, 21, has risen quickly to prominence since his debut at the end of 2017.

More to follow…

England T20I squad: Eoin Morgan (capt), Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Pat Brown, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Lewis Gregory, Chris Jordan, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Matt Parkinson, Adil Rashid, James Vince

England Test squad: Joe Root (capt), Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Saqib Mahmood, Matthew Parkinson, Ollie Pope, Dominic Sibley, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes

Apple re-fixes a bug that let users jailbreak iPhones

This current update fixes a kernel vulnerability that would have allowed an attacker to “execute arbitrary code with system privileges” on an iPhone or iPad. Apple also mentioned Pwn20wnd, the hacker that released the public jailbreak. “We would like to acknowledge @Pwn20wnd for their assistance,” the company wrote in a security update.

As you might remember from the early days of the iPhone, jailbreaking allows users to install third-party apps that aren’t available through the App Store. But doing so also puts phones at risk of spyware. So, while the iOS 12.4 bug might have given us a trip down memory lane, you’ll want to download iOS 12.4.1 as soon as possible.

Jack Leach could prove key as Somerset seek elusive title

Jack Leach returns for one of the most important matches in Somerset’s history when leaders Essex visit Taunton for the Specsavers County Championship title decider, starting on Monday.

The hosts must win to secure the pennant for the first time. They go into the match 12 points adrift in second place, but optimistic of making home advantage tell, having won five and drawn one of their six Championship games at the Cooper Associates County Ground this season.

Leach’s availability after his Ashes heroics is a major boost. The left-arm spinner, who has just been awarded an England incremental contract, trained with the squad on Friday and could prove a key figure on a pitch sure to turn as the match progresses.

With rain forecast, Somerset will be keen to play on a result wicket in the hope of forcing a victory well inside four days. A gamble on a bowler-friendly surface appears to offer their best chance, even though Essex have two of the most prolific wicket-takers in the Championship.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer is top of the list with 78 wickets, while seamer Jamie Porter is also in the top 10, with 48.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr is in confident mood, despite last week’s 136-run defeat by Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

“It’s an incredibly exciting week ahead, not just for the players, but for the many supporters, who have taken the emotional journey with us in recent weeks,” he said. “What could be better than the two best teams in the Championship going head-to-head with the title as the prize.

“We cannot control the weather, but I believe there will be enough play to achieve a decisive result and we back ourselves against anyone on our home pitch.”

“Essex have had the distraction of Vitality Blast Finals Day this weekend and hopefully we can capitalise on that”

A packed crowd and large media circus will descend on the County Ground, most of the latter expecting Essex to be crowned champions.

Kerr acknowledges that Somerset’s batsmen will need to raise their game. None of them is averaging more than 33 in the competition this season, whereas Essex have three with an average of more than 40 in Sir Alastair Cook, Ravi Bopara and Dan Lawrence.

“Statistically, our batting looks poor, but we have played on some tough pitches and there have been some fine innings in difficult circumstances that have helped us win through,” said Kerr.

“I am expecting the players concerned to step up on last week when we came across a bowler in exceptional form. Kyle Abbott’s performance was just incredible.”

After discussions with director of cricket Andy Hurry and skipper Tom Abell, Kerr looks set to stick with the same batting line-up against Essex, with Leach’s inclusion likely to be the only team change.

Jamie Overton missed the Hampshire match with a back injury and was sent for a scan on Friday. He was already facing surgery on an ankle spur at the end of the season.

Kerr’s final message to the Somerset players will be to “go out and enjoy the occasion”. While he accepts there is pressure to deliver that elusive first title, he wants his team to ignore the hype as much as possible.

“So much work has gone into getting us this far,” he said. “Now it is important we stick to the processes which have put us in the top two.

“Essex have had the distraction of Vitality Blast Finals Day this weekend and hopefully we can capitalise on that. Given a reasonable amount of luck with the weather, I’m sure we can do it.”

Kerr ruled out a sentimental recall for Marcus Trescothick, who announced some time ago that this would be his final season as a player. Somerset will make a presentation to the 43-year-old at the lunch interval on Monday to mark his 27 seasons of service.

Trescothick will be in and around the dressing room during the game and Kerr said: “I hope he gets around the ground and soaks up the atmosphere. It would be fitting if we could win the title he has dreamt about for so long.”
