Nokia’s Uphill Battle

Stephen Elop knew he had taken on a tough job. But eight months after taking the helm at Nokia, the true scale of his challenge is becoming clear.
Shares in the Finnish telecom-equipment company slumped 18% Tuesday in Helsinki after Mr. Elop said it would sell far fewer mobile handsets than expected in the second quarter. That leaves Nokia’s fate even more dependent on an unproven technology partnership with Microsoft. Investors are rightly skeptical.
